A large tropical orange flower with a great many tubular florets on it is growing in a sunny area with a dappled woods blurred in the distance behind it. On the flower perches an alert little bird with a blue face, back, wings, and tail, and rusty orange underparts sweeping from the vent to the chin. The beak is slightly open, making it obvious that the upper mandible has a large hook in it. This is the male Rusty Flowerpiercer. He does not sip from the florets like a hummingbird, instead, his plan is to stab at the base of the floret to get at the sweet nectar. Cocachimba, Peru. Photo by Peachfront. Nov 2024.
