The folk tradition has a few songs about doomed lovers separated by rushing rivers, going against the will of controlling parents with tragic consequences.
Classic example, Clyde's Water (Mother's Malison). Nic Jones recorded the song as Drowned Lovers which is a bit of a spoiler. I've always liked this version by Kate Rusby.
