For #MakersHour today, hello, I’m Hollie and here’s what I’m working on…

1) A small watercolor swatching book for relaxation, decided not to put a cover on it and just painted squares instead.
2) A new text block clamped together, still unsewn
3) A finished text block in French stitch, which is to be a collection of sketches made while I have regular Sunday brunch with a friend - still uncovered
4) The first page of the brunch book

Utopie dattilotessili is a collaboration between the Sardinian artist Davide Tocco and Oreri—Iniziativa Editoriale. The book includes reproductions of 100 graphic works created by Davide Tocco. It also features a conversation by Fiammetta Pani and Ilaria Pisanu, an essay by Wu Ming 1, a glossary by Federico Antonini and Marta Veronese, and a conversation between the editors and Davide Tocco. This bilingual edition of 500 copies was produced in its entirety without using a computer or any graphic design software. The works were copied using the Riso MF9350 duplicator’s scanning plate and colour separation software, and printed in red and black. For my first-ever #MakersHour post, here’s the first hand bound book I ever made, in 1999. I love it so much. It’s filled with photos and journal entries. I haven’t made another book exactly like this one since, but learned Coptic stitch a few years ago and just finished a class on French stitch. I do hope to make some others like this one (I think a cork cover could be beautiful), I just need to relearn the stitching technique.

It’s time for a snapshot #introduction of me, and how I'm hoping to contribute to this platform

My name is Cassie and I run a Philadelphia based community craft and art group. The group started 9 years ago on another well known platform and over the years it stopped serving our purposes. My hope is that this space can help connect our local community and inspire others to follow suit.

I prefer she/her and they/them pronouns and I default to using they/them pronouns with new people that don’t specify a preference.

I wanted to share some of my work for #PortfolioDay. I do #bookmaking and #bookbinding in my spare time. I love doing something with my hands. I've had to take a small break since our child was born but I hope to get back into the swing of things in the new year with better paper, new ideas, and more patience. I’m in the middle of another bookmaking class. I freaking love this, every step. I even enjoy the math of it, the precision. I wish I just made and sold books. I saw an interview recently with Elizabeth Gilbert, where she talked about a journaling/prayer practice she does where she writes whatever she needs to hear from her higher power the most, and I think if I did that what I’d most want to hear is, “Put all the old bullshit career pressures you feel down, and just make books.”

This weekend i decided to try to mke my first #hardcover #journal project.
Although i had some hard times, and lot of the cuts were not straight, i'm pretty happy with the result.

Craft Project! I have a beloved Kobo Libra H2O. It has a proprietary case covered in a blue fake leather that began to flake. I took it off and for a while went with the cloth underneath. But that was beginning to fray and so I decided to fix it with my ninja bookmaking skills. Probably should have used a thinner cloth for the magnet but it looks beautiful!

Finally got around to some more bookmaking projects! This was my first attempt at doing cloth covers, and I tried making an accordion book with thicker paper and a Coptic stich sketchbook. I'm really proud of them and feel like each time they become a bit easier.
