I am trying to learn something about this little hand carved pipe figurine. The head comes off and becomes the bowl of the pipe and his walking staff is the stem of the pipe. My mom (87) thinks it belonged to her grandfather. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

An unusual wooden pipe alongside the late 18th Century Howford Bridge over the River Ayr near the villlage of Catrine in Ayrshire. It appears to consist of a central iron core surrounded by wooden staves held in place by metal bands. I've no idea what this pipe would have been used for, or when it was installed.
